Inverse Press feature on Arcana’s The Book

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

If you’re interested in reading some about the history of The Book, the development of the project, and how the artist got involved with it, head over to THIS LINK to read the full article. Below is an excerpt.

What drew Amanda to this dark and innovative project?  In her own words:  ”Anyone who knows me and how I feel about comics (and movies, books ect.) knows I tend to side with the villain over the hero.  No, I’m not wicked or mean-spirited in any way, it’s just that villains are always more interesting!  I was hooked on The Book when I saw Krieger’s description…I wanted to be involved with the project even more when I got a load of that lovely skinless fellow gracing the cover. What can I say? How often does a Hellraiser super fan get to put their own spin on a skinless villain? It’s a dream come true, I say!”

Writer, Erik Hendrix also shares his thoughts on the cool, brand new graphic novel (not generally available until later this year):  ”The Book was actually a combination of two ideas, one that Michael David Nelsen had and one that I had. Michael’s featured a series of DIY travel guides and I had a story about people killing themselves and using a ritual to bring themselves back from the dead in an attempt to learn religious secrets from the other side. By combining the two ideas, we found the right mixture of characters and back story, which developed into a secret religion with ties to both the bible and religious “mythology”.

The Book arrives in stores in December and makes its debut in August on ComiXology starting with Issue 1! You can pre-order it now through Arcana.com and other online retailers.

Jazma Online interviews War’s Chosen creator Arthur Bellfield

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Jazma Online recently did an interview with War’s Chosen creator Arthur Bellfield about the book, its history, etc… You can read the entire interview by CLICKING HERE, but see below for a sampling from it.

Rich: How did you come up with the idea for “War’s Chosen”?

Arthur: I was in high school and I wanted to create my own X-Men team to be honest with you. Over the years the characters stuck with me and I decided to go for it!

Rich: What do you think of J.C. Grande’s art?

Arthur: J.C.’s art is fantastic! He’s a great storyteller and knows how to bring characters and scenes alive. His style is a bit sketchy at times to create a certain emotion and that at other times his line work comes alive and makes you say “Damn!” He was perfect for this type of action story!

Rich: What do you think is the main selling point of “War’s Chosen”?

Arthur: The main selling point for War’s Chosen is that this is your chance to read a comic that isn’t watered down or made to be a movie or a toyline..it was made with the readers in mind who want something from a comic that is a mixture of everything that loved about comics growing up! The storyline is fantastic, the characters have their own voices, plus the ending will give you chills! If anything buy this book for the ending, and for the discussion that this book will open up! Plus, Ceara Tags is in it, and she’ll be a breakout character along with Pulserat!

Wired.com’s “Geek Dad” Interviews Howard Lovecraft creator Bruce Brown

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Howard Lovecraft, featured in the outstanding Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom and, more recently, in Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom, was recently reviewed by Wired.com’s “Geek Dad”. Below is an excerpt from the review, but please CLICK HERE to read it in full.

“Nothing like a good children’s story about a boy and his pet, Cthulhu.

Wow, did I really just say that? That is the story presented in Bruce Brown’s Howard Lovecraft graphic novel series. I recently had a blast reading through the first book in the series, Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Mountain. In fact, this is probably the only version of Lovecraft that would not completely warp my seven-year-old’s mind. We both really enjoyed the artwork and the story so much that we had to pick up the second book, Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom. I believe that fans of Lovecraft will get the connections made in the stories, probably by the titles alone.

I caught up with author Bruce Brown (hoping to get a sneak peak into the next book) and here is what he had share about his young adult series:

Sims: What gave you the idea to create works based on Lovecraft horror, geared toward young adults?

Brown: The series started from a short story I had written for a horror anthology. It took place during the moment where Lovecraft’s father suffered a nervous breakdown and I placed a young H. P. Lovecraft, in the story, at that moment in time. After the story was published, I could not let go of the idea of this younger Lovecraft character so I sat down and began writing the frozen kingdom. I loved the idea of introducing elements of Lovecraft’s work into a story that all ages could enjoy and hopefully introduce a new generation of readers to the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Sims: What age would you say your books are appropriate?

Brown: The series is definitely an all ages book. Younger readers can enjoy the adventures of Howard and Spot and older Lovecraft fans can enjoy this unique take on some classic Lovecraft characters and stories.

Sims: Can you give us an overview of these adventures of young Howard and Spot?

Brown: The Frozen Kingdom begins after visiting his father in Butler Sanitarium. Young Howard Lovecraft ignores his father’s warning and uses the legendary Necronomicon to open a portal to a strange, frozen world filled with horrifying creatures and grave danger. Alone and scared, Howard befriends a hideous creature he names Spot who takes him to the castle of the king where he is captured and sentenced to death.

The Undersea Kingdom finds Howard Lovecraft’s family being imprisoned on a far flung planet, Spot hopelessly captured, and Howard slowly becoming a mindless Fishman. Accompanied by his insane father, a pistol-packing constable and his hungry cat, they must face the all powerful ruler of the Outer Gods, a revengeful old enemy, an army of deadly monsters, in a lethal world called Yuggoth, to save the day. All Howard has to do is surrender his Father’s book. But that would mean certain doom for all of mankind.

Sims: How many books are you planning in the series?

Brown: I would love to do another book in the series, but that really depends on sales of this book. So, really those who supported the first book are the reason there is The Undersea Kingdom. Hopefully, the talented Dwight L. Macpherson and I will get the chance to do another tale!

Thank you to Geek Dad for the interview and, again, be sure to CLICK HERE to read it in full. To read more about Howard Lovecraft, read on below.

Paper Dragon Ink interviews Sean Patrick O’Reilly on Intrinsic

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Paper Dragon Ink recently did an email interview with Intrinsic writer, Sean Patrick O’Reilly, to discuss the origins of the story, starting this FCBD May 5th with Intrinsic #1. They also touched on the characters, what they bring to the team, and the writing dynamic between himself, Casey Jones, and Erik Hendrix. You can read the entire interview by CLICKING HERE, but below is an excerpt. DO NOT MISS Intrinsic #1 this FCBD!

2.) What specific characters did you choose? Why?

The characters pretty much picked themselves in our minds… Kade is where Arcana began several years ago, so he had to be included to show just how far the character has come since his inception. Candice Crow and Philosopher Rex represent the breadth of characters Arcana has - Candice is the flawed superhero, super-confident in costume and extremely uncertain out of it. Philosopher Rex’s main character, Ishmael Stone, is the other side of the spectrum, a super-confident modern day wizard, delving into the darker side of the Arcanaverse. Kore represents some of what we’ve done along the way – in this case acquiring a number of spectacular characters from the Devil’s Due universe. The other main characters are ones who were created through the evolution of the storyline, unique in their own way and each could easily stand on their own. From a character standpoint, each has a different perspective and history they bring to the table, creating an imperfect dynamic among characters who need to learn to work together.

3.) What is the threat to the heroes?

The end of all things! Kade’s biggest nemesis, Apollyon, is set on a particular goal, which leads him to tear through the fabric of multiple realities. Nothing good can come of that! He has an army behind him and it is up to the assembled Intrinsic team to find him and defeat him.

4.) Why do choose to burst the reader into the action? How does that lead the reader in?

We started Intrinsic out with a bang, showing countless heroes getting their collective rears handed to them by Apollyon and his army. It helps give perspective to what’s at stake… Stop him or everything you care about goes away.

There’s a LOT more in the interview, so be sure to head over to the Paper Dragon Ink site by CLICKING HERE to read it in full.

Shadowlaw featured on USA Today site!

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Shadowlaw, Brandon Easton’s Sci-Fi masterpiece, has received an impressive amount of press the last few months. Most recently, USA Today featured the book and interviewed the creator. Below is an excerpt, but please be sure to CLICK HERE to read the article in full.

“I once joked that I put vampires into my story just so I could find ways of killing them,” Easton says. “I wanted to get away from the romantic Southern gothic vision of vampires that Anne Rice had made popular over the last 30 years. The last thing I wanted for my creatures were for them to be wearing ascots and lace.”

He’s not a fan at all of vampire fiction, but he did grow up in Baltimore reading classic sci-fi literature and watching Star Wars, Alien, Superman, Logan’s Run and other movies “like almost every kid born in the 1970s.”

Easton also still finds influence in “the zeitgeist of 1980s afternoon-adventure animation geared toward teen boys” that was a part of his pop-culture diet, from Transformers, G.I. Joe and Robotech to Voltron, Masters of the Universe and M.A.S.K.

“I was very much inspired by the complexity of animation and storytelling,” says Easton, a writer for Cartoon Network’s ThunderCats animated series. “Although these series were created with the mandate of selling toys, the writers managed to carve out some very interesting stories in imaginative ways.”

The original concept for Shadowlaw came from one place, though: watching Blade Runner time after time and thinking about what if vampires existed in that future world. Easton wrote the first script treatment for it when he was at Ithaca College in 1996, but found it derivative of many of the things he had enjoyed over the years.

Rue Morgue article on Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Rue Morgue recently interviewed Bruce Brown on his book, Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom and the series of books in general. Below is an excerpt from the article, plus a scan of the whole thing! Be sure to pick up a copy of the book when it comes out next Month!

“It’s been a little over a year since the publication of Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom, which saw the notorious author portrayed as a six-year-old boy on adventures with his tentacled pet, Spot (a.k.a. Cthulhu). Writer Bruce Brown’s aim was to craft a story that could be loved by hardcore Lovecraft fans while simultaneously introducing a new generation to the writer.

Mission accomplished. Frozen Kingdom proved to be a surprise hit and managed to attract exactly the kind of audience Brown was hoping for.

‘I have heard from countless parents who loved the fact that they initially had a book they could share with their children and introduce t hem to the world of H.P. Lovecraft,’ says Brown. ‘Many went on to say that it is a book they wish they had when they were children.’

… Joining Brown for this outing is co-author Dwight L. MacPherson, the editor of the first book… ‘It was Dwight who introduced me to the writings of Lovecraft through another project I was co-writing with him years ago,’ says Brown. ‘So, it was only natural that I invited him to co-write the second book.’

Undersea Kingdom is a much darker work than the previous outing. Both Howard and Spot have to face difficult truths regarding each of their heritages and both have potentially tragic decisions to make as a result. Howard must choose between sacrificing his family or the entire universe. To make matters worse, he also has to deal with his body’s bizarre and traumatic transformation into a gill man.”
