“This is certainly one that fans of the Arcana line should jump on, as well as those of us who have had a passing interest in them. It’s your chance to see what they have and what they have coming up… If you are looking for something different than the regular stuff then I think this is a book you should check out. Even taking into consideration what I’ve just said, this book could easily be the doorway to a whole new universe of possibilities that any reader burnt out on the same old, same old could easily latch on to!”

We’re t-minus one day until Free Comic Book Day and we’re as excited as little kids on Christmas eve… Intrinsic Issue 1 is making the press rounds now, our Free Comic Book Day entry this year. Below is some of what Fellowship of the Geeks had to say. In an email, they even told us they thought Intrinsic was a better crossover than another one going on right now from another publisher. I’m betting readers out there can figure out which!

Thank you to Fellowship of the Geeks for the kind words! Read it in full BY CLICKING HERE.

“INTRINSIC is Arcana’s first cross company event, and it has the potential of being one of the better ones in a while. This issue is certainly has substance, not just style and hype. Allan Otero’s art is great; he handles the action and drama with ease. This should be a fun ride and I will be there alongside them.“

Omnicomic.com recently got a hold of an advance preview of Intrinsic and liked what they saw! You can read the entire review by CLICKING HERE, but below is an excerpt from the review.

“The story by O’Reilly, Jones and Hendrix is interesting and galactic. They’re working to bring together a lot of characters in the Arcana universe and they do so pretty well. The issue will definitely be a who’s who for fans of Arcana who are familiar with their work. It’s also accessible to those who aren’t so familiar, as the main players are presented very cleanly and the issue clearly defines the good guys and bad guys…

The art and coloring by Otero and Chandran is very superhero oriented. That is, the characters very much have a comic book feel to them. There are a few panels that are essentially brawls that are done quite well and the comic overall has a bombastic color tone to it. It works for the story.

The Intrinsic #1 is a legitimate full issue, despite being released on Free Comic Book Day. That’s to say, it’s not a six-issue prequel or anything. It’s a solid first issue that really lays the groundwork for a potentially action-packed series that will bring plenty of Arcana favorites into play. It’s definitely worth checking out, both because of the story and because it’s free.”

Jazma Online recently did an interview with War’s Chosen creator Arthur Bellfield about the book, its history, etc… You can read the entire interview by CLICKING HERE, but see below for a sampling from it.

“Rich: How did you come up with the idea for “War’s Chosen”?

Arthur: I was in high school and I wanted to create my own X-Men team to be honest with you. Over the years the characters stuck with me and I decided to go for it!

Rich: What do you think of J.C. Grande’s art?

Arthur: J.C.’s art is fantastic! He’s a great storyteller and knows how to bring characters and scenes alive. His style is a bit sketchy at times to create a certain emotion and that at other times his line work comes alive and makes you say “Damn!” He was perfect for this type of action story!

Rich: What do you think is the main selling point of “War’s Chosen”?

Arthur: The main selling point for War’s Chosen is that this is your chance to read a comic that isn’t watered down or made to be a movie or a toyline..it was made with the readers in mind who want something from a comic that is a mixture of everything that loved about comics growing up! The storyline is fantastic, the characters have their own voices, plus the ending will give you chills! If anything buy this book for the ending, and for the discussion that this book will open up! Plus, Ceara Tags is in it, and she’ll be a breakout character along with Pulserat!“

Omnicomic recently reviewed Joe Martino’s Shadowflame on their web site, which you can read by CLICKING HERE. Below is an excerpt from the review and some information on how you can pick up a copy of Shadowflame!

“Tom Wyatt is an officer for the NYPD, working hard to get him and his wife into a better situation. One of those late nights turns bad for his wife, the victim of the crime in the neighborhood they live. A second before he’s about to take his own life, he’s “saved” by a race of aliens who need his lineage to stop Maldestrak, a destroyer of worlds.

Wyatt is imbued with intergalactic powers and dons a suit that brands him Shadowflame. As Shadowflame, Wyatt is taking his newfound abilities to the streets in an effort to stop the Baltinetti family from running the street. His newfound and refined war on crime brings him across villains such as Electrocutioner and Doctor Anarchy, as well as other superheroes such as Agent Napalm, Cyberine, Crimson, Desiree, Barrel and Caress.

Shadowflame is an interesting story. It’s a tried and true story, where a human being is given cosmic powers and uses those for the better good. The story has that 80s Marvel feel, where everything was about the universe and the characters interacting with it.

Wyatt as a character goes through quite a transformation from start to finish. He goes from being on the verge of suicide, to reveling in his newfound powers to realizing that he’s now got a higher calling thanks to those powers. Instead he found himself transported to a ship orbiting the Earth. The aliens aboard explained that he could not kill himself for he was the last of a chosen line. So after hearing the story of Isht and his family, Tom agreed to take the power. In a painful ceremony he was endowed with powers that set him apart from other men.
“The story begins with a bunch of rednecks at a local bar having a normal night of fun. At first, they don’t realize that the television broadcast of an alien is for real. One of the dudes then makes a comment. This is one of the funniest comments ever…”d@mn Teletubbies, get the race on, Jimbo”! That was hilarious, and several other moments like that are what make this book so funny.

Although, on the flip side of all the humor, if you really think about it, the characters in the bar that carry the story along with a “resistance” fighter, are very real in the sense that anyone who lives in a rural area probably knows a few of these types. Seriously, though, the characters that drive the book are definitely believable, but also over the top at the same time.

The aliens themselves are a pretty neat concept. Their design is a typical alien life form design, but they do have these long tendrils that emanate from the back of their heads. The reason the aliens are on Earth, is because they found a fuel source called SF-92. The reveal as to what that actually is makes for some more funny moments, as well. Bruce and Chip do a fine job with showing the wacky characters, the funny settings, and the aliens’ motives for being on Earth. It’s a light read, but an entertaining and humorous one.“

If you’re interested in picking up a copy of the book, read on!

Description: The Earth is ruled by ruthless alien invaders who came to our planet seeking a mysterious power source known only as Sf-92. Now, one year later, the merciless aliens have crushed the planet’s armed forces and annihilated all freedom fighters. All but one: SGT Coleman is Earth’s last hope. If he can find Sf-92 then maybe–just maybe–he can use it against the alien conquerors and win mankind’s freedom. His search brings him to Clay County: a backward, redneck slice of the deep south that is completely unaware–or too drunk to care–of humanity’s subjugation by an alien army. Together with the unlikely allies of Clay County citizens Blake, Vern, Hot Dog and Root, Coleman sets out to find Sf-92 before the Earth’s otherworldly overlords, save mankind, and drink a few cold ones along the way.

Howard Lovecraft, featured in the outstanding Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom and, more recently, in Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom, was recently reviewed by Wired.com’s “Geek Dad”. Below is an excerpt from the review, but please CLICK HERE to read it in full.

“Nothing like a good children’s story about a boy and his pet, Cthulhu.

Wow, did I really just say that? That is the story presented in Bruce Brown’s Howard Lovecraft graphic novel series. I recently had a blast reading through the first book in the series, Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Mountain. In fact, this is probably the only version of Lovecraft that would not completely warp my seven-year-old’s mind. We both really enjoyed the artwork and the story so much that we had to pick up the second book, Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom. I believe that fans of Lovecraft will get the connections made in the stories, probably by the titles alone.

I caught up with author Bruce Brown (hoping to get a sneak peak into the next book) and here is what he had share about his young adult series:

Sims: What gave you the idea to create works based on Lovecraft horror, geared toward young adults?

Brown: The series started from a short story I had written for a horror anthology. It took place during the moment where Lovecraft’s father suffered a nervous breakdown and I placed a young H. P. Lovecraft, in the story, at that moment in time. After the story was published, I could not let go of the idea of this younger Lovecraft character so I sat down and began writing the frozen kingdom. I loved the idea of introducing elements of Lovecraft’s work into a story that all ages could enjoy and hopefully introduce a new generation of readers to the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Sims: What age would you say your books are appropriate?

Brown: The series is definitely an all ages book. Younger readers can enjoy the adventures of Howard and Spot and older Lovecraft fans can enjoy this unique take on some classic Lovecraft characters and stories.

Sims: Can you give us an overview of these adventures of young Howard and Spot?

Brown: The Frozen Kingdom begins after visiting his father in Butler Sanitarium. Young Howard Lovecraft ignores his father’s warning and uses the legendary Necronomicon to open a portal to a strange, frozen world filled with horrifying creatures and grave danger. Alone and scared, Howard befriends a hideous creature he names Spot who takes him to the castle of the king where he is captured and sentenced to death.

The Undersea Kingdom finds Howard Lovecraft’s family being imprisoned on a far flung planet, Spot hopelessly captured, and Howard slowly becoming a mindless Fishman. Accompanied by his insane father, a pistol-packing constable and his hungry cat, they must face the all powerful ruler of the Outer Gods, a revengeful old enemy, an army of deadly monsters, in a lethal world called Yuggoth, to save the day. All Howard has to do is surrender his Father’s book. But that would mean certain doom for all of mankind.

Sims: How many books are you planning in the series?

Brown: I would love to do another book in the series, but that really depends on sales of this book. So, really those who supported the first book are the reason there is The Undersea Kingdom. Hopefully, the talented Dwight L. Macpherson and I will get the chance to do another tale!“

SideShows, released mid-March by Arcana Comics, was recently reviewed by the site WhyNotIndie.com.
“This story appeals to every reader out there with its unique plot and visually stunning artwork.

Hendrix’s story of super powered circus freaks turned mob enforcers in 1950’s Las Vegas, is brought to life with Nelson’s near impressionist illustrations. Every mob story follows the stereotypical themes of loyalty, deceit, betrayal, and violence in them but SideShows takes those themes to a whole new level.

The action is exceptional and Nelson shows this with his artistic style whether it’s one of the SideShows performing a hit or just expressing the tension between the characters. Hendrix does an excellent job revealing each of the character’s unique personalities within the dialogue. The story pays homage to the Lone Ranger and to mob films.

The unique mixture of the circus, superpowers, the mafia, Vegas, and the old world coming to the new world with the make up of immigrants, all come together to make SideShows a dark and intriguing story.“
