Synopsis:
In 1978, a charismatic but deeply disturbed man named Rodney Alcala appears as a contestant on the popular TV show The Dating Game—and wins a date with bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. Unbeknownst to the producers and the audience, Alcala is already a convicted sex offender and, at that time, an active serial killer.
“Woman of the Hour” follows the tension-filled buildup to that fateful episode, focusing on both Alcala and Cheryl. The film explores the unsettling contrast between the show’s lighthearted tone and the darkness lurking beneath, as well as the broader social context that allowed a predator to charm his way onto national television. Through Cheryl’s perspective, it examines themes of trust, misogyny, and the dangers hidden behind charisma and charm.
The film mixes elements of true crime, social commentary, and psychological drama, offering a gripping portrayal of one of the most disturbing moments in television history.
